New Castle, DE (July 16, 2022) – One person was killed and several more were hurt in a car accident that took place in New Castle on Friday afternoon. The crash happened around 1:00 p.m. on Interstate 295 south near the Delaware Memorial Bridge Toll Plaza.
The Delaware State Police and other agencies responded to the scene. According to officials, a Toyota Corolla crashed into a Toyota Highlander that had slowed for traffic in front of it. The initial collision led to a crash involving two other vehicles, a Ford F-150 and another Toyota Highlander. The driver of the Corolla, a 24-year-old Florida man, died from his injuries. The female driver of the first Highlander and three passengers in her vehicle were transported to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.
None of the crash victims have been identified at this time. The accident had a major impact on traffic in the area as motorists were backed up more than 7 miles from the crash site. The road was closed until approximately 2:30 p.m.
An investigation is underway at this time. No further details have been released.
