Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Delaware
Delaware reported 32 total pedestrian deaths in 2019. This number represents 3.29 fatalities per 100,000 residents. This number is quite high, considering that the national average death rate for pedestrian accidents is around 1.89 per 100,000 people. From these statistics, we can infer that Delaware is a more dangerous state than many others when it comes to pedestrian safety. It only takes a single second of negligent driving behavior to cause a major pedestrian accident. To makes matters worse, when a crash does occur, it is likely to be very and even fatal in nature.
There are some steps that pedestrians can take to lower their odds of being in a crash. This includes walking only in well-lit areas when possible and utilizing crosswalks and other clearly marked areas to travel across the road. Pedestrians should be fully aware of their surroundings at all times in order to reduce their risk of a crash. Despite safety precautions, however, not every accident can be avoided.
