According to a report from the DSP, a 2003 Toyota Solara was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-495. The Toyota sideswiped three cars before it entered the northbound lanes. Once in the northbound lanes, the Solara was rear-ended by a 2017 Kia Forte.
The 30-year-old male driver of the Solara suffered critical injuries in the crash. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His name is being withheld at this time pending family notification. The driver of the Kia, a 36-year-old Wilmington man, was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The road was closed for more than four hours as investigators cleared the area and learned more details regarding the accident. Police continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact the DSP’s Collision Reconstruction Unit.

We would like to offer our thoughts and condolences to all who were affected by this deadly car accident in Wilmington.
Car Accidents in Delaware
Last year, there were more than 30,000 reported car accidents in Delaware. This amounts to about 100 accidents reported each day. Some of these crashes were serious in nature and, unfortunately, involved death or serious injuries. About 8,000 people are injured, and more than 150 are killed annually in Delaware car accidents. A substantial number of these victims will be killed or injured in accidents that were someone else’s fault.
Careless and negligent driving continues to pose major problems on Delaware’s roadways. While drivers can certainly lower their risk of a crash by following basic safety laws, not every accident is entirely avoidable. In some situations, the innocent victim is placed in danger from which they cannot escape. These scenarios lead to serious and catastrophic crashes.
Under Delaware law, you could be entitled to compensation if you were injured or affected by a car accident that was not your fault. The weeks and months following the crash can be stressful as you may wonder about your legal rights and whether you even have any options. Fortunately, there is help available. It is always important to speak with a Delaware car accident lawyer in order to determine your rights as soon as possible.
