Bethany, DE (May 19, 2023) – Authorities in Bethany responded to the scene of a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on Friday morning, May 19th. The accident took place just after 10:15 a.m. in the 32000 block of Coastal Highway.
According to a report from the Delaware State Police, a Hyundai Tucson was traveling in the Walgreens parking lot. At the same time, a pedestrian was also in the parking lot walking towards the Tucson. The vehicle made a sharp turn to pull into a parking spot. As it entered the space, the Tucson crashed into the pedestrian. The pedestrian, an 89-year-old Bethany Beach woman, suffered critical injuries. She was taken to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Tucson, an 82-year-old Maryland woman, was not injured in the crash.
The parking lot was closed for about four hours while officials investigated the crash and cleared the scene. There is no word on whether any charges will be filed in connection with the crash.
An investigation remains ongoing at this time. No further information is avaialble.
