According to a report from police, 89-year-old Celeste Speer was walking in the Walgreens parking lot. At the same time, an 82-year-old woman was operating a Hyundai Tucson in the same parking lot. The woman attempted to park the Tucson in a marked space. As she pulled into the parking spot, she collided with Speer, who was walking within the space. Speer was rushed to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Tucson was not hurt in the accident.
The parking lot was closed for over four hours while police investigated the collision. There is no word on whether any charges are expected to be filed.
No further information is available at this time.
We would like to offer our most sincere condolences to the family of Celeste Speer following this deadly pedestrian accident in Bethany.
Delaware Pedestrian Accidents
Pedestrian accidents in Delaware do not happen as commonly as other types of collisions. However, this does not mean that they are less deadly or dangerous. In fact, quite the opposite is true. It is estimated that at least 80% of all Delaware pedestrian crashes will result in injuries or even death. Pedestrians have little or no ability to avoid the serious force of a collision, and the result is often catastrophic.
A substantial number of pedestrian crashes in Delaware occur because of driver negligence. In these instances, the pedestrian was merely an innocent victim who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. When this occurs, the driver can be issued a citation and may face both civil and criminal responsibility for their actions.
