Dover, DE (October 21, 2023) – Dover officials have identified the man who lost his life in a motorcycle crash earlier this week. The collision happened on Tuesday, October 17th around 5:15 p.m.
According to a report from the Delaware State Police, a red 2019 Dodge Ram was traveling westbound on Hazlettville Road, just east of Apple Grove School Road. At the same time, a black 2022 Kawasaki EX4 motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Hazlettville. The Dodge attempted to make a left turn into a private driveway but turned into the path of the oncoming motorcycle. The truck collided with the motorcycle’s front tire, ejecting the rider from his bike. The motorcyclist then came to rest in the westbound lanes of Hazlettville.
The rider, an 18-year-old man from Dover, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have identified the man as Ethan Statham, a student at the University of Delaware. The driver of the Dodge, a 57-year-old Dover man, was not hurt.
Police closed the road for about four hours while they investigated the collision and cleared the scene. The collision remains under investigation at this time. It is unclear if any charges will be filed.
No further information is available.
We would like to offer our most sincere condolences to the family of Ethan Statham following this deadly motorcycle crash in Dover.
Motorcycle Accidents in Delaware
Compared to other types of crashes, motorcycle accidents are typically more dangerous and more likely to lead to serious injuries than other types of accidents. The reason is fairly simple, given the fact that motorcycle riders have no protection from the force and impact of an accident. A rider is especially vulnerable to being seriously hurt or killed due to an accident on our local roadways. In fact, nearly 90% of Delaware motorcycle crashes also involve reported injuries for the rider. Many motorcycle accident injuries, including broken bones and serious trauma, can cause problems for victims long after the crash has occurred.
A Delaware motorcycle accident must be carefully investigated in order to determine its cause. Conflicting witness statements and a chaotic scene can sometimes lead to difficulty in determining exactly how the collision took place. Trained investigators will look at the scene and then make a conclusion as to who is at fault. If the accident was caused by another driver, the injured motorcyclist may then have certain legal rights.
