Townsend, DE (January 26, 2024) – A fatal pedestrian crash was reported in Townsend on Wednesday, January 24th. The crash happened around 5:20 p.m. on DuPont Parkway near Blackbird Landing Road.
According to a report from authorities, a 2023 Kia Soul was traveling northbound on DuPont Parkway. The Soul was operating in an erratic manner when it collided with a 40-year-old pedestrian who was walking along the shoulder of the roadway. The pedestrian was wearing bright-colored, reflective clothing at the time of the incident. The Kia came to a stop after the crash before erupting in flames.
The pedestrian, who is from Townsend, was not immediately identified pending family notification. The Kia driver was not injured. Following an investigation, it was determined that the driver was under the influence of a drug. The driver was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance and other charges. Two passengers in the Kia were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The road was closed for approximately four hours while the crash was investigated. During that time, drivers were advised to avoid the scene and to find alternate routes of travel if possible. No further information has been released at this time.
