Wilmington, DE (March 24, 2025) – A fatal crash occurred early Monday morning, March 24, on Interstate 495 northbound, claiming the life of a 35-year-old man from Darby, Pennsylvania. The incident, reported by the Delaware State Police, happened at approximately 4:57 a.m., just south of the exit for US Route 13.
According to the Delaware State Police, a silver 2011 Ford Fusion had come to a stop in the center lane of I-495 northbound, with the driver standing in front of the vehicle. A gray 2019 Jeep Comanche was traveling in the same lane when it struck the rear of the Ford. The impact forced the Ford forward, hitting the driver before slamming into the guardrail along the right shoulder. After the collision, the Jeep came to a stop in the left lane of I-495.
Emergency responders, including paramedics, arrived promptly at the scene. Despite their efforts, the driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until family notifications are made. The driver of the Jeep, a 34-year-old woman from Newark, was uninjured.
The roadway was closed for approximately 4.5 hours as authorities investigated the incident and worked to clear the wreckage. Firefighters were involved in the extraction of the vehicles, and traffic control measures were put in place to manage the congestion.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this tragic time.
