Felton, DE (March 27, 2025) – A fatal three-vehicle crash in Felton claimed the life of a Dover man and left another driver seriously injured on Tuesday morning.
The crash occurred around 9:01 a.m. on March 25 along Canterbury Road, just north of Roesville Road. Investigators say a Ford Fusion heading southbound at a high rate of speed collided with a Toyota Camry that was making a left turn onto Roesville Road. The impact spun the Camry, and the Fusion then veered off the roadway before striking a Mazda CX-5 traveling northbound behind the Camry.
Authorities reported that the Fusion struck the Camry’s rear passenger side before crossing over and slamming head-on into the Mazda. The Mazda rolled into a drainage ditch after the collision, landing on its side. The 33-year-old driver of the Ford Fusion, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld until his family is notified.
The driver of the Mazda, a 28-year-old man from Felton, was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries. The Camry’s driver, a 70-year-old Felton woman, was not injured. Canterbury Road remained closed for approximately four and a half hours as law enforcement officers investigated and cleared the wreckage. Delaware State Police are still working to determine all factors involved in the crash.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the man who lost his life. We also hope the injured driver recovers fully.
Fatal Car Accidents in Delaware
Delaware continues to see hundreds of lives lost every year due to crashes on its roadways. In 2023, more than 160 people were killed in traffic accidents across the state, many involving speed, impairment, or distracted driving. Rural roads, like those near Felton, are especially dangerous due to higher speeds, fewer traffic signals, and limited visibility. These areas often see more severe outcomes in collisions compared to urban streets.
Crashes that involve fatal injuries often stem from a combination of high speeds and poor road judgment. Here are some key things to know about the serious risks involved in high-speed accidents:
-
Speed Reduces Reaction Time: When vehicles travel at high speeds, drivers have far less time to react to sudden changes, such as a turning vehicle. Even a fraction of a second can make the difference between a near miss and a fatal crash.
-
Increased Force of Impact: The faster a vehicle is moving, the more energy it brings into a collision. This can cause far greater damage to the vehicles involved and dramatically increase the risk of fatal injuries.
-
Seatbelt Use Is Critical: The man who died in Tuesday’s crash was not wearing a seatbelt. Proper seatbelt use significantly reduces the chance of being thrown from the vehicle and suffering fatal trauma during a crash.
-
Secondary Collisions Are Common: High-speed accidents often lead to chain reactions. In this case, the initial impact between the Fusion and Camry set off a secondary crash involving the Mazda. These types of chain events can complicate rescue efforts and increase injury risk.
-
Investigations Take Time But Are Crucial: Crash scenes involving fatalities require detailed analysis. Investigators look at skid marks, vehicle damage, and road conditions to determine what happened and whether charges are appropriate.
