Lewes, DE (March 12, 2025) – A fatal bicycle crash occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Lewes, resulting in the death of a bicyclist. The incident, reported by the Delaware State Police, happened at approximately 12:57 p.m. at the intersection of Venables Dr and Senators Dr.
According to authorities, a Hino ST box truck was traveling northbound on Venables Dr, approaching Senators Dr, when it turned eastbound onto Senators Dr. At the same time, a 68-year-old bicyclist from Milton was traveling northbound on a paved bicycle path that parallels Venables Dr and attempted to cross Senators Dr. The bicyclist tried to avoid the collision but hit the right rear of the truck.
Emergency personnel, including paramedics and firefighters, promptly arrived at the scene to assess the situation and control traffic. The bicyclist was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.
The driver of the box truck, a 26-year-old man from Wilmington, and his passenger, a 27-year-old man from New Castle, were not injured in the crash. Firefighters also assisted in securing the area and ensuring that no additional hazards were present. The road remained closed for approximately two hours as investigators processed the scene and cleared debris.
